Pet Travel

Spotted this set up at Ceduna Caravan Park ,4 dogs in total  . It took about 4 minutes to set up and the dogs and other campers were all happy .  Carried the wire on the draw bar  only thing he need was a corner site to drive the van onto

they certainly look happy enough, but my little mates wouldnt stay in there, too far from dad, they would be out of there and on my lap in an eyeblink

Funny you mention getting out . I asked the same question and he said that with or without the little fence they never wander off it's like a force field around the van . He started with one as a pup and the other came along and followed suit . My Black Lab is like yours if I'm out of sight it's panic stations.

Home without pets (especially dogs) is just a house to store crap in between trips

My main concern when we travel with Gracie is that some low life may half inch her. I will put her on a chain I think when I am out of sight, other wise I have a 5 metre lead that would stop her wandering off with anyone offering her a liquorice alsort, a dried apricot, a slice of apple or infact anything edible....She even thinks that Glucosomine tablets are "doggy treats".....

Gracie is going OK now, she is on a limited exercise regime i.e. no long runs, no jumping tall buildings, and gets her last Carpothen shot on the morrow. "Half Inch" is sailors slang for "pinch" as in "steal"... Obvoiusly only a lady of such refinement as your self would not know what that meant....

Hi Everyone, I'm new to Grey Nomads and am still looking for a motorhome - I'm looking at staying on the road for a while.  I have two German Shepherds and my main worry is keeping them safe.  What are the best ways to do that say, if I left them for a couple of hours at the vehicle?  I'm sure you've seen lots of different ideas in your travels.  I'm thinking also that eventually I may look for some work while travelling around so want to be sure they are the most comfortable but most importantly safe.  Hope you can help.

Hi jean, welcome to the freedom arena, my god protection for your two big doggys, I thought one would need protection from them, if you park your rig in a c/park when working, surely they would be safe, and if you take your rig to the job site then wouldnt you be able to either watch them your self or ask someone to just look in on them, what sort of motorhome are you looking for, I will be after a mazda t4600 winnebego alpine in about 2.9 years, the dragon wants to take our little fellers along with us as well, but they are only bite size for your blokes, so they can stay in the rig

Jean

I am not sure this will help much, as your dogs are - How do I say - on the tall side.

I deal with cattle and horses, and some folk have purchased "sheep Panels" that clip together, to go around their floats. They stack flat, and most attach them to the exterior, just six or so panels. These when setup, make a yard around the side of their float.

Hi Jean I would think your dogs would be safe locked in the motorhome as long as you have good air con when up north they will need it. I did see someone try and steal a staffy at a park in WA but the owner had left the dog tied to the van and gone out. Luckily intervention from fellow campers prevented this. If its all day  when you find work maybe a day in the kennel wouldn't be so bad they are fairly cheap just for a day and not overnight. I think the majority of people in parks with dogs are honest but for your own piece of mind would lock them in when you are not there. Cheryl

I'm new to the Grey Nomads forum so here goes. I travel alone or should I add with my Border Collie. We ventured around Australia last year as well as crossing the Nullabor five times in the past 3 years. (No I'm not stupid, I have a daughter in Perth.) We have tackled many shorter trips as well.
I always travel with a dog crate and find it wonderful for containing my girl when I need to take a shower especially when its too hot to put her in the car. Being a not so young lady My girl and I have a small tent as a caravan is too large for my small car to pull.

Bl, I should look up your profile to see if there is a name.

Way to go. MOST solo GN, have a pet. Problem is, they start to determine what you do, but that is better than a human doing the same!!

I am like you, caravans are out, but a tent is "top of the wazer", but more likely, to swag it on the ground, or back of the ute.

Join in, its fun, lots of info to be recieved for nothing - even a good joke for around the camp fire - animals do not recieve jokes well, mine does not anyhow.

Hi Wraggers,

Warmed my heart to see that someone else also travels with two Shepherds.  We have travelled with our two Shepherds for the past 4 years, without any problems whatsoever.    We initially had a Ford BA Waggon and they travelled in the rear of that and slept in the Van with us of a night.  We have them on a plastic covered long lead attached to the draw bar on the Van, or we have a shade cloth annex that they stay in and cannot get out.  The rear of the station waggon was their home (kennel) which they also spent a considerable amount of time in.

We have never had a problem with people and our dogs. Only one caravan park whic accepted dogs refused us and that was at Gunnedah NSW.  Every where else has been fine.

Thought I should let a fellow traveller with 2 x German Shepherd dogs know.

Guess it really doesn't answer you question tho.   The extra security is nice you know smile.gif

Take care

Peter

hey Bilko welcome.... Yes I appreciate the added security of a large though docile dog.... The intimidation factor is good, I've trained Gracie to "speak" and give her the cue by finger so that anyone showing any undue interest gets a good barking at with me making effusive appologies. Dogs are great security.

Has anyone come across a non spill water dish for our canine friends? If so I would appreciate any info on purchasing one ASAP. We live at Pioneer Bay which is near Cranbourne/ Wonthaggi in Victoria. Regards, Ablett

Hi Wraggers and Border Lady

I have a toyota Hi Ace campervan at present (up grade or caravan and tug vehicle is in offereing though)
I have always travelled with dogs, earlier on it was with my Goldens, then my Labradors for Dog shows antd trials, now my last Labbie Carlin has gone Blind and is not so happy to travel as he gets a bit too scared og just about everything. Sometimes if I only want a shortish trip he stays here in darwin with my house mate, for whom I am carer - they both have a similar outlook and take on life these days and get along really well! I just tell friends that I've left the two old blokes at home!! lol.
Safety aspect - I will only leave the boys in the van unattended if I absolutely have too if the weather is hot and then only for very short spells, with wet towels down and 2-3 water bowls. I have an extra sliding window, a special metal bar made up that allows the back door to be left open a foot or two (updraft of cooler air comes in) but still locked, and before I head off next time I will have a roof vent installed. Any new vehicle I have will definately have a roof pop up air vent!
the best set up I saw was a lady who travels and she had a great professional 'gate arrangement built into a Hi Ace van as part of her whole fit out, it locked up and had lockable storage under the back of her bed too. fairly price but hey, it's for our best mates so what the?!!
When in a park or camped up for a few days I have a large size fold up wire crate with a shade cloth cover that goes over the whole crate - always in the shade! I also have tie out stakes with clips and a light chain (not a lead as they can be chewed!)
Having said all that, in 2006 after I had spent 7 months on the road from Darwin through WA and SA I arrived in Victoria (my sort Home State) and parked up in a supermarket car park to just grab a few bits and pieces and after only 10 mins away came back to find my campervan and dogs had been stolen. The worst time of my life.
The Vic cops were wonderful especially when they new the whole story and that my mates were in the car-they even bought Police dogs down, the works. Within 2 hours they hadfound my Van, I had lost just about everything of value BUT the boys had not been hurt or just thrown out which was my fear. Sadly it was the start of Carlins eyesight loss and lots of other problems but I did not realise that at the time.
But things like that don't happen a lot I am sure so all I can say is Go For It, your dgs will love it! Clancy my Whippet adores being on the road and making new friends every day, especially if they are dogs that will play wih him!

Annie

Hi I'm new to this so don't know if I'm doing this right. My husband and I would dearly love to join the Nomads. However we have 1 rothweiller, 1 siamese, 1 main coon and 1 lorikeet.

The rotti is fine, sticks to me like glue and is very friendly with everyone but won't leave my side and actually is the best behaved of the lot. The lorikeet everyone wants him, but we have had him since he fell out of a tree and he is now about 10 years old. I think we would miss him and he would miss us so he's definately coming. Our biggest worry is the cats the siamese loves dad and I don't think will mind the van, however the main coon is our problem. He loves checking everything out, I have bought a harness for him and am trying to train him. My worry is how do you keep your cats inside the van, do they get upset if they can't run free.

Charlie Bronson is already over 9 kilos and still growing, hides from other people is not vicious to humans but loves to get into fisty cuffs with other toms. He is desexed and is a beautiful child but I'm worried what will I do if he does not like being in the van all the time.
Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you deal with it.
