                   I would go for a Pajero or Prado if I do change.Just got details on NRMA site,and the Prado comes out on top as far as economy goes ,but might lose it when towing big load .Yes traffic was heavy heading south on boxing day.We left newcastle about 2.00pm and had clear run home all the way,however our son travelled up the next day and struck heavy traffic and constant stopping till Buladelah.It is getting easier,and if I know it is going to be bad will divert through Gloucester,and come out just down road from our turn off to Forster.My weight of van and boat etc comes in at about 2600kg,so can,t expect more than I am getting.Vehicle is on Carsales ,so will see how we go ,otherwise I will be happy to stay with ute for now .Hope to catch up somewhere on the road.

Like you I like to "get there" too and the numbers I quote for the NQ trip contain quite a bit of travelling at or near the speed limit as I do not like holding up traffic. I do like to have a "handle" on the consumption however for the purposes of trip planning. I usually enter the fuel data into a spreadsheet when I return home. I rarely ever bother with checking my "around town" fuel consumption.

In comparing vehicles, if the quoted fuel figures are not substantially different I would not consider that to be major factor in the final decision. My final decision rested on being able to do a much better deal on the Pajero compared to the Prado.

We have a 1998 Mitsubishi Triton 3 litre petrol manual. The Other Half is fanatical about recording our k's.

On the last trip we averaged 13-16/100klms. That was across the Savannah Way, Gibb River Road and the Tanami plus sealed roads to Darwin etc. We always use 98 or the highest grade fuel we can on the road. We tow a Jayco Hawke Outback.

He just gave me his calculations in all conditions from Oct '06 till now, 35,200 klms, we averaged 14.64/100klms.

We are thinking of going to diesel next vehicle which is next year and a bigger van so who knows. The old Triton comes up ok with all the diesels by the looks.

08-09 Pathfinder Diesel, around town about 11/100 with 16 ft van single axle 13/100 at 90- 100 KPH between Port Macquarie to Mosman NQld and return

I,m Back with some info that you might or might not want,but it answers my question.I finally got on a site that has done a really good test on most popular 4x4 tow wagons towing a Jayco Sterling 2050 kg dual axle van ,that I would think would be a 20 footer.The test was on 2006 models and four weeks of full time driving and heaps of fuel.The site is www.overlander.com.au Here is the outcomes of 20 odd pages that I downloaded. Landrover dicovery 2.7 litre 18.2/100 range of tank 400klms Landcruiser 4.2litre 18.2/100 '" " " 724klms Pajero 3.2litre 18.6/100 " " " 432klms Nissan 3.0litre 19.0/100 " " " 607klms Pathfinder 2.5litre 20.4/100 " " " 342klms Terrecan 2.9litre 17/100 " " " 391klms These are all deisel models ,but they also give details on the petrol models if needed I can give specific ones.

Go to lpgautogas.com.au and see for your self. To check the nth/sth route go to the trip planner and insert Adelaide and Darwin. For the east/wast route do similar.

However be warned, in the past I have noted that this misses some towns. To check a town that may have been missed use the 'find an outlet.'

we drive a 06 rodeo td auto - pull a 14 ft viscount sea breeze. get usually and i do say usually given the variables... 11.5 litres per hundred klms. thats fully loaded with a boat on the roof, can anyone tell me if the boat on the roof makes a wind cutting effect? over the week drove 350 odd klms from bris to gold coast and back and around town... fuel usage 8.5 ltrs per 100/k. never been happier than with the diesel....

We are trying to decide if we should convert our 80 series l/cruiser to gas for better towing economy.At the moment we have a camper trailer but plan to buy a 20-24' van for permanent living on the road.So many questions.........

Hi,could someone please tell me how to work out how much fuel I'm using please.94 Toyota landcruiser 4.5 petrol.We did 220 k's from a full tank and it took 33.65 lts to fill again.I have no idea if this is ok or not!

I would be happy with it. Maybe others wouldn't? When towing it will depend on the weight of the van, speed, wind direction, terrain, etc.etc. I have a 99 Prado petrol and do 15-16L per 100k at average 8okph 16-18L per 100k at average 90kph 18-20L per 100k at average 95/100kph towing a 16ft coromal pop top lowline. about 1350k g.v.m if it costs me a few dollars more to drive a bit faster, then i can camp up an extra day to recoup. at the end of the day i feel its a matter of being happy and comfortable with what you have. It's probably a bit late but, heck, we just got Connie. A 15.5 ft Windsor Streamline towed with a diesel Peugeot 406 did 9.2 l/100 km, (normally 6.1 w/out van) last week.

 We run a 100 series 4.2 turbo diesel pulling a 20ft full van we get 16 to 100k and 10 to 100 no van. Not good in heavy traffic or head winds. Love the diesel much better than the 27 to 100 out of the old petrol 80 series we had.

I have sold the Navara and have bought a 1998 GLS Pajero( yes stayed with petrol)3500,and am very pleased with it .On way home from Sydney I did 400ks on half a tank,which is 10lt/100 kls,and have towed the Sterling down to Sydney and back home getting bout 18lt/100ks whic is slightly better than the Navara,and I a happy with that.Maybe one day I might buy a deisel,or get this Pajero converted to gas.Thanks for everyones input.
